Yogic breathing lays the foundation for pranayama and meditation. It is complete lung breathing that activates all three lobes of the lungs, increases oxygenation to the body and builds the elasticity of the lungs.
Since shorter breaths create more thoughts, increasing lung capacity is very important to meditation. Yogic breathing will help increase the length of breath. One of our goals is to train the body to naturally reach 4 breaths per minute without any strain during meditation.
While there are many ways to work on the lungs, I have found this technique the most effective. In this method we will be using mudras (hand gestures) to activate the different lobes of the lungs. You will see how your fingers can activate and create sensation in different parts of your body. Yogic breathing must be practiced everyday for a minimum of 50 breaths.
